Recap from previous blog posts: the author’s of MS 408 in the quire 13 section are strategic Navy military attacks and battlegrounds. Mons Meg the largest cannon ever built was used by the admiral of MS 408 to take down Zheng He and force Imperial Chinese officials to open fair trade to Europe.
Like most things in researching this information in historical records it seems events surrounding the mission in MS408 has been redacted. Clouded in mythology and “mysterious deaths” the typical MS408 narrative was hard to track down. How events actual took place is unknown – though all we can present is the outcome.
Emperor Xuanzong of Ming of China met with foreign dignitaries at southern palace, Forbidden City, 25 December 1434. Two weeks later he dies of a mysterious death, possibly poison.
The events leading up to his death. Before Emperor Xuanzong of Ming took the thrown his father made plans to move the palace farther up North. However, upon taking power, he made the decision to reverse his father’s plan to relocate the capital from Beijing to Nanjing.
In Folio 76v, the authors of MS408 instruct the bombing of two main ports in Vietnam and Luzon. However, this always confused me as to why. After much digging Emperor Zuanzong of Ming in the early days of his reign, a prolonged war in Vietnam ended with Ming defeat and Vietnam’s independence.
After a short reign of ten years, the emperor died due to a brief unknown illness. His rule was marked by a period of relative peace, with no major internal or foreign conflicts. Later historians regarded his reign as the golden age of the dynasty. If he was marked as the golden age then why did foreign dignitaries show up and enter the forbidden city, which was a serious offense? Hence, forbidden city. It might have something to do with the eunuchs’ rebellion? During Xuande’s rule, eunuchs gained influence, particularly in the secret police. The emperor sought order through purges in the Censorate and military service reforms in 1428, but these didn’t fully address inefficiencies and low morale among hereditary soldiers. Zheng He, the admiral that the authors of MS408 are tracking down and attacking was a member of the eunuchs in military service.
Cartography and Mathematics of Folio 78r:
It is very important to note that the mathematics on this folio set up how to calculate outside of the Catalan Atlas. Without this knowledge it would be difficult to sail outside of China up North. The atlas loci points (loci: (mathematics) The set of all points whose coordinates satisfy a given equation or condition,) drawn in MS 408 as the flowers.
The text references pulling apart the ream of the manuscript due to it being rewoven and twisted to view the book binders grid. With carefully analysis of photographs taken by researcher Lisa Fagin Davis it was realized that the North latitudes are the book binders holes. Due to tangential distortion when the folio was scanned the holes are slightly off in the diagram below.

Military Strategy: The folio text references: a type of pillar gate in a mine “perron”; Ellora Caves, a religious rock carved sacred temple in India (this reference is a deception.) Pillar references early maps of this location from Folio 43r. The pillars drawn in 43r are indicative of the Imperial Chinese Palace Pillars upside down. Folio 78r expedition is said to go to an island to point and shoot Mons Meg directly at the Imperial Court. In Folio 43r the pillars position is Chongming Island outside the city of Shanghai. Chongming is drawn in Folio 78r as the elongated “P” in the second paragraph.
