Folio 79r – Salish Sea & Sisters of Wind

It’s not every day that one gets to translate the Voynich Manuscript and discover their own back yard. So, today is an exciting day for Dr. Dad and I, as we explore the past of our home State, the great Pacific Northwest. In Folio’s 46v-49r are maps of The Cascadian Subduction Zone from the Alaska Current, Columbia River into the California Current. However, these maps do not reflect Puget Sound, the most windy rainy rainforest on Earth. Folio 79r connects to 46v-49r filling in the gaps of the dangerous wind and rain conditions and the transition from the Queen Charlotte fault line into the Juan de Fuca fault line.

The Native Tribe of Washington Coast, the Salish people, called Puget Sound “Whulge” or “Whulj”, which is an onomatopoeia for the sound of waves. The name comes from the Lushootseed word x̌ʷəlč, which means “sea, salt water, ocean, or sound”.  Voynich Authors spell it “Ualya”, IPA: /wæ͜ɑl:jʌ/, From Scots wal meaning “wave” + ia = Sea of Waves. Salish Sea: In 1989, Bert Webber proposed the name “Salish Sea” to reflect the entire cross-border ecosystem. In 2009, Washington State and British Columbia officially recognized the name to honor the Coast Salish people.

Ethnobotany: Berberis aquifolium Pursh. State flower of Oregon, aka Oregon holly-leaved barberry. Used for upset stomach and makes an excellent wine. Holly is sacred in Celtic mythology and symbolizes peace and goodwill. The barberry can be found in Alaska down the Pacific Northwest coast to northern California.

Viking Sun Stone: Due to the rainy cloudy heavy atmosphere and weather conditions of the Pacific Northwest it was vital to use the Viking Sun Stone to get bearings. The Voynich Authors write about how to calculate position using the Viking sun stone in paragraph three.

Important Word:  PEI – meaning peak. Appears seven times in Folio 79r, referencing mountains in the Northern Cascade Range. However, due to several earthquakes and volcanic eruptions the Mountain Peaks referenced in the Voynich Manuscript are very different from how the appear today. For instance, in Folio 49r a major earthquake caused a massive mudslide destroying the bridge of the God’s and restructuring the Columbia River Gorge. Because of these natural disasters the Voynich Manuscript is all that is left of what used to stand.
