Ethnobotany: Salmon People of the Yurok Tribe
I was born not to far from the Klamath River. Once realizing the location of Folio 79v fond memories of my childhood and the animals my brother and I would play with came to light in the drawings by the manuscript authors. The Klamath River is a special place once home to millions of fish per year, redband trout, large mouth bass, salmon, and other animals like the mule deer, alligator lizards, river otters, beavers and a lot more. My brother would always bring home an alligator lizard he would catch with his bare hands. I could never figure out how to catch them, those little guys are wicked fast. The animals drawn in the Voynich are depicted in the fall season, which was an excellent observation by Dr. Tucker and confirmed by the translation on the page. The mule deer drawn by the river has lost its horns which it will do every season in the Fall.
Klamath River is home to the Yurok Tribe. They have spent many years trying to restore the Klamath River to its original ecosystem, and this year they finally completed their mission. God bless them! God bless people who do good in the world while no one is watching. The Yurok where able to convince the State of California and Oregon to tear down all dams in the Klamath River which will aid in rebuilding the once thriving fish ecosystem it was during the days of the Voynich Manuscript. The last dam in the Klamath fell August 2024. May the fish flow back to the people.
On Folio 79v I always found the lady fish drawing fascinating. Amongst the Yurok Tribe and others in that region they have a legend of the Salmon People. The Yurok tell of their origin story that the creator who made salmon also made humans. Salmon are a gift from the creator and are depicted in their art, culture and lifeline to a thriving community. The story of the Salmon people is that Salmon People lived in longhouses under the sea. When they were in their village, the salmon had bodies that looked like people. Each year, the Salmon People put on robes of salmon skin and became fish for people to catch. After being caught and eaten, the bones were returned to the ocean. The Yurok believe that the salmon they catch today are descendants of those managed by their ancestors.

Totem Poles are used by tribes in this region to symbols their people and tribe. The Totem Pole for the Yurok Tribe would reflect a Salmon Person as seen in the image below. Which was drawn in the Voynich as the Salmon Women in the lower left corner.
& The ampersand
The most clever part of the construction of the Voynich Manuscript in whole is its use of “and.” To understand this the plants on the page are plants, and, maps, and ocean currents, and clues, and deception and … whatever they had as a whimsy. The language is also full of ampersand clues, words that have multiple meanings in which the authors cleverly wrote in a way that was all encompassing. The way that I got the latitude was a clue in the language from the word “lisaei” which comes from Norman meaning “read.” & it also comes from Ancient Greek meaning the town of Macedonia. Macedonia and Klamath River are the exact same latitude. & there’s more.
The Salmon Women drawn in the Voynich Manuscript is the Greek Goddess’ from Macedonia known as Maenads, they where divine women of spiritual ecstasy dancing and frolicking drinking wine around in the forest barefoot. The Salmon People of Klamath River also had … wine, really really great wine from what we now call the California Wild Grape.
3rd Line states “Multiple had been thrown forward movement.” To a sailor that is telling them to Block and Tackle up the river. The authors draw this in the folio with women in the block and tackle pulling themselves up the channel.
27th Line states “leaving the pass through high rocky hill is a false statement.” This is why one needs to fully translate and calculate what the authors are writing. They are tricksters and draw false statements – a lot!
28th Line states “The Holy Time Stake.” Dr. Wayne R. Tucker and I wrote a book about such things back in 2020 called “Discovering Lost Origins of Humanity.” In it we describe “the holy time stake,” which is actually just called the cross. Page 115 states “…consider an ancient navigational tool called the cross. It has various regional names. The cross has been a navigational tool that dates back to 3,000 BC and perhaps could have been used even earlier. The idea depends on the cross’s vertical stick being moveable. If the main stick is marked at specific intervals it is possible to determine an approximate latitude directly from the sun’s height in the sky.” The full text in the Voynich says “The Holy Time Stake (women #1) has attained exhausted moving away the variation secant arc, it will be going the angular radius (spin of Earth.) **This blog post is dedicated to my Grandpa Wayne Tucker. A Navy Engineer and a life long sailor. He would take me out bass and salmon fishing near the Klamath River as a child. He would always be politely grumbly when I caught all the fish. However, he only let me steer the helm once because even with his sea legs my steering made him throw up. I hope he’s in the heaven’s happy to know I was paying attention.
