Triggering Warning, The Voynich is not a book about flowers. It’s about trade war and peace. Some pages are about friends, some are about enemies. The people described in this folio are my friends and I cried translating this page. The authors are military men describing war strategy against a Native American Tribe in the Colorado River. I don’t know the exact tribe they are speaking of, and frankly it’s too sad for me, I’ll let some other archeologist research it.

As a dumb high school kid back in the 90’s I spent time in Arizona/Utah in the Navajo Nation Reservation. High school kids on mission trips are so useless, I think us kids do more harm then good when it comes to putting a nail in a piece of wood. Our mission was simply build relationships as we hammered nails on top of a 110 degree roof in Arizona. I so desperately wanted to build a nice roof for them so I stuck it out until I almost fainted. The rest of the time I spent in the shade drinking Gatorade feeling like a stupid useless teenager.

The reservation is harsh terrain. I will never forget the out house that was built on the edge of the grand canyon where you can see the steep peaks when you opened the toilet lid. Water was scarce and the gardens where small. But the hearts of the people where larger than life. On the last day the owner of the house we where helping greeted us with lunch. He was a line chef in town and made us all hamburgers. It was the best hamburger I have ever had in my entire life, literally tasting like gratefulness. I am grateful for the honor to call them friend.

The authors of the Voynich will speak about a tribe in this region that where violent. In the 13th century a tribe with that description occupied the upper regions of the Grand Canyon but mysteriously disappeared. No one knows where they went or why. Is folio 80r describing a people that vanished only to be confused in later generations by a peaceful Ute tribe? There is a theory that ancient civilizations may have lived in the Grand Canyon’s hidden depths, including in tunnels and underground cities. However, there is little scientific evidence to support this theory. The authors mention that a tribe did live in tunnels and mines and would attack by this route.

UTE Clothing
The authors write words next to ladies at the top of the folio, saying “To obtain its bearings the points of the compass repeats. I am saying to be said, move away from the pass through. Hide. Monster Enemy.” The word hide is not “to hide”, but as in hide from an animal. The woman and man depicted in Folio 80r are wearing hide Native American tribal attire.

Ethnobotany: Prickly Pear – According to Aztec legend, the god Huitzilopochtli told the Aztecs to build their capital city where they saw an eagle perched on a prickly pear cactus. The Aztecs found this spot on an island in Lake Texcoco and named their city Tenochtitlan, which means “the land of the nopal cactus”. Tenochtitlan is now the site of Mexico City.

Military Vocabulary
Line 23, 4th word, “itor.” Latin for “you will advance,” used in the future passive imperative, which is to convey a command that should be fulfilled in the future and only used in legal documents. A book strictly about botany would not use a legal command. The fact that this word is in the Voynich makes it a military document.

Boatswain’s General Call
Line 18, words 1-4. literally says “chirpy sound apparatus particularly 9-notes.” After researching Boatswain’s calls this 9-note is an all hands on deck serious call to be at stations, silent ready for instructions. The Boatswain’s whistle is held by the second women on the top left, which matches Scottish 14th century Boatswain’s whistles of the time.

Pantograph and Compass Dividers
Line 15, Words 1-3, “confirm quadrilateral stream.” In nautical chart making the use of a Pantograph would anchor the image of the coast line. Compass Dividers where used to measure and alter the chart scale. The Compass Divider is in the hands of the women in the middle on the left hand inner side.
