In Folio 1r, the authors of Yale MS 408 (Voynich Manuscript) text book describe how to use a spherical orb in order to observe the suns positions based on how the suns raise hit the sea-level at the horizon. Such orbs where used for thousands of years but most specifically described in Nordic traditions as the Viking Sunstone. A stone made of iolite gemstone, an inexpensive easy to acquire crystal. (*update a more through research paper is being written regarding the history of the Sun Stone and mineral test in the manuscript that support this work.)
The Viking Sun Stone is drawn in the Catalan Atlas (as shown in image above,) the sister document to MS 408. The Catalan Atlas is a fantastic display of the Cartographer’s Orb Projection System. This system seen with the naked eye looks to our modern eyes distorted and stretched, but observing it through the lens of an orb and its as if you’re seeing Earth from space. See image below of the comparison to the Fro Mauro Map (which used the orb projection system.) MS 408 uses the Orb Projection system to manipulate the cypher and to draw the maps inside the cypher paragraph grid system.
